Soft Voice Guessing
Why Soft Voice Guessing works
Soft Voice Guessing turns a short sequence into practice with comfortable attention and low-pressure observation. Play a gentle guessing game in which one person says a familiar word or animal sound in a soft, normal voice. The child begins by learning how to sit close enough that whispering is unnecessary, then uses that experience while trying to choose a small set of familiar words, animals or family-safe sound effects.
Set up — Sit close enough that whispering is unnecessary
No special materials are needed before the child is asked to sit close enough that whispering is unnecessary. Support the child directly if they struggle to sit close enough that whispering is unnecessary; do not explain the whole sequence before they try to choose a small set of familiar words, animals or family-safe sound effects. Let comfort come first; the child may keep eyes open, move position, or stop during the opening round.
Step 2 — Choose a small set of familiar words, animals or family-safe sound effects
Keep the pace slow while the child tries to choose a small set of familiar words, animals or family-safe sound effects. If the effect is hard to see, simplify that action before continuing with the instruction to the adult says or imitates one item softly and the child guesses.
Step 3 — The adult says or imitates one item softly and the child guesses
Treat the attempt to the adult says or imitates one item softly and the child guesses as a checkpoint between the earlier step to choose a small set of familiar words, animals or family-safe sound effects and the coming step to then switch roles. A perfect answer is not required.
Step 4 — Then switch roles
After completing the instruction to then switch roles, pause and ask what changed from the earlier step where they had to the adult says or imitates one item softly and the child guesses. Use that answer to decide whether they are ready to give an easy clue if the guess is difficult.
Step 5 — Give an easy clue if the guess is difficult
Keep the adult prompt brief while the child tries to give an easy clue if the guess is difficult. If needed, return to the earlier step to then switch roles before asking them to give an easy clue if the guess is difficult.
What to notice before Give an easy clue if the guess is…
When the sequence reaches the instruction to then switch roles, watch for whether the child notices a detail without being pushed to stay still or perform. If they can connect what happened while trying to the adult says or imitates one item softly and the child guesses with the final instruction to give an easy clue if the guess is difficult, the sequence is making sense.
Make The adult says or imitates one item… easier or harder
Change difficulty one variable at a time around the step where the child must the adult says or imitates one item softly and the child guesses. For support, shorten the round and use one obvious thing to notice; for a stronger round, add a second comparison, a memory check, or a child-led choice before the child finishes by trying to give an easy clue if the guess is difficult.
Finish after Give an easy clue if the guess is…
Use a comfortable voice rather than prolonged whispering or shouting. Use that result as the stopping point for Soft Voice Guessing. Find the next activity in the activity search, or make a new one with the activity generator.
How to play

- Then switch roles.
- Give an easy clue if the guess is difficult.

Make it easier
When introducing this activity, use the first two instructions and stop there. Keep “Sit close enough that whispering is unnecessary.” and “Choose a small set of familiar words, animals or family-safe sound effects.” Nothing else needs to be added on the first pass.
Make it harder
For the next level, let the child decide when the middle step is complete. The step that stays central is “Then switch roles.” Do not add speed or competition.
Play together
In Soft Voice Guessing, for a two-person round, assign the first instruction to Player A and the middle instruction to Player B. Use “Sit close enough that whispering is unnecessary.” as the opening job and “Then switch roles.” as the handoff point. In Soft Voice Guessing, switch roles for the next round.
Two or more kids
In Soft Voice Guessing, with three or more people, give each person one part of the sequence. Keep “Use a comfortable voice rather than prolonged whispering or shouting.” as the common finish. In Soft Voice Guessing, no one needs to be eliminated for a mistake.
